Part IV: Sybrin’s Recipe for Success

In our previous article we discussed why project methodologies are important, we looked at some of the popular methodologies available, as well as the ones best suited toward the software industry. For the fourth and final instalment in the series, we will reveal Sybrin’s recipe for success in our hybrid approach to project management and delivery.

Did You Know?

Sybrin successfully implemented Africa’s first cheque truncation system in Malawi back in 2003 - which was only the third system of its kind in the word at the time? Since then, Sybrin has helped numerous organisations to digitise and go paperless with countless successful projects throughout the years consisting of more than 800 systems for over 100 clients in more than 20 countries across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.

Best of Both, our Hybrid Approach to Project Management

By combining the best parts of both the Waterfall and Agile methodologies into a flexible yet structured project management strategy, we end up with a host of advantages that neither methodology can offer on their own.

The Hybrid methodology can be structured in various ways. Sybrin prefers to utilise the upfront planning processes from Waterfall, combined with an Agile development cycle, rounded off with Waterfall’s UAT, Go Live, and Post Go Live Support procedures. This gives us an optimum mix of detailed planning, testing, and support that customers prefer for management and budgetary purposes.

The Agile portion of the Hybrid methodology forms the development cycle, broken down into Sprints. This ensures that the team can respond quickly to changing requirements and ensures that working software is produced on a regular basis.

Our Hybrid methodology consists of several different phases to cover all aspects of the project deliverables;

Sales
Our Sales force are adequately equipped to help build the Business case which best suites and cover all customer needs. Marketing and deploying our solutions through our dynamic teams as well as via growing Business Partner Network.

Design
With each new project Sybrin deploys a Senior Analyst along with a Technical lead to the customer site for end to end solution designing and analysis workshops. Requirements are documented alongside the customer within their environment to ensure minimal scope creep and optimal business benefit.

Implementation
At the onset of the project implementation, the following topics are negotiated and reflected in the agreements signed between Sybrin and the customer; Payment & credit terms. Travel and site visits. Training and support Agreements and signoff. Our service offering includes system design, architecture and various specialised product delivery methods. Cutting edge technologies used for in house development makes for stable, quality products with minimal need to apply multiple patches to the live environment.

Test
Our Quality assurance strategy includes both deep core product, development and configuration as well as end to end front end testing. Our testing organisation is mature with real time progress reports available on demand.

Release
Our release cycle is focused on customer training, environment setup, continuous working product delivery and support with ongoing customer testing. Sign off for all testing cycles may only occur once both parties are fully satisfied with the delivered product.

Run
With sign off by both parties the working software is deployed to the live environment where the customer will receive optimal business benefits. At this stage the upfront agreed SLA will kick in whereby Sybrin assigns support staff for incident management. Any & all system changes required will follow the change management process with the agreed methodology approach.

With hybrid, the planning is done using the waterfall approach. The execution and delivery are handled by the Agile method. Our hybrid approach makes the planning and project estimation a lot more accurate. At the same time, the team can react to market changes and deliver what the market demands in place of what the team planned.

Advantages

  • The design and planning phase produces detailed requirements and budgets.
  • Sprints ensure regular release of working software.
  • Making changes to already available software is simple.
  • CIT integrated throughout the project lifecycle ensuring quality deliveries.
  • Regular working software demonstrations.

Other advantages include:

Increased flexibility: Past the planning stage, our Hybrid method affords significantly increased flexibility when compared to the Waterfall method. This allows for changes as they're requested.

More structured: By borrowing the initial planning phase from Waterfall, the Hybrid method addresses one of the biggest complaints about the Agile approach - lack of structure and planning. Hence, you get the best of both worlds.
