Build the Future

Former South African President, Nelson Mandela, showed us the way by taking our country’s future into his own hands. He was a man who fought for what was right, and in doing so, gave hope to all South Africans, young and old.

Sybrin celebrated Mandela Day by lending our support to Build the Future (BTF), a local NGO supporting underprivileged children in the Kya Sands informal settlement.

BTF follows Madiba’s lead with an ongoing project at Kya Sands aimed at supporting early childhood development in the form of a safe area in which children can learn and play. Currently, the school supports 75 children and is housed in a number of shipping containers.

Last year, we assisted BTF with various projects, including the levelling of ground, creating a sandpit where the children can play, clearing rubble, and handing out soup to the children and community. This year, we’ve built on the foundation of last year’s initiative by assisting the school in the following areas:

  • Levelling new ground, and planting grass, so that the children can have a lush play area.
  • Painting the shipping container classrooms and bathrooms in order to brighten up the space.
  • Feeding the children, staff, and community members.

Supporting Organisations

Of course, none of this would be possible without support from other members of the community. With this in mind, we would like to say a very big thank you to the following companies:

  • Go-Hire CC, for providing free tools and equipment for the second year running.
  • Jack’s Paint and hardware, for providing the paint at a discount.
  • Virgin Active, for allowing our hardworking, sweaty volunteers access to their showers.

“As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest.”

- Nelson Mandela

Let’s take these words to heart, and not rest until we have all made as much of a difference as humanly possible.
